Carotic is a top-down 3D couch co-op hide and seek game for 2-4 players. Each player plays the role of a car in a very busy city. Their task is to drive like the other NPC cars while trying to identify the other players. In order to gain points the other players must be destroyed by dashing into them. The player with the most points after a set amount of time wins.
Carotic was created as part of the master's degree in MultiMediaTechnology at the Salzburg University of Applied Sciences. The game was mainly developed by Marc Kletz with help from other students, all of whom are named in the credits below. It started as an asymmetric multiplayer game, then became a split screen hide and seek with random events, and finally evolved into the Carotic it is now. The game features five game modes, all with different quirks, and is available on Steam for Windows.
It was also a particular honour to be mentioned on gameskeys.net in their list of top Steam games to look out for in March 2021 - you can find the mention here.
This is the core gameplay of Carotic, as described above. The player's goal is to find the other competitors and dash into them, which scores points for the dasher and destroys the other player with a short respawn timer. Dashing NPCs does not penalise the player, apart from revealing them - because of the particle effect and the speed boost they gain.
The first modification I created for Carotic. In addition to the normal game mechanics, circles of particles spawn randomly on the map. Players can drive through them to gain additional points, which provides a common incentive for the players to group up on one point - and that opens up more options to destroy the others.
Evolved from an earlier idea, the chaos mode, in which all buildings on the map were destructible. Similar to Reach the Goals, this one has the additional quirk that there is always one random building which can be destroyed by dashing into it. Destroying buildings is rewarded with points, which again creates a common incentive to group up around a key point on the map.
As the title suggests, KRAKATTACK features a kraken attacking the town. Players can dash into its tentacles to make them retreat into the water, and the monster will destroy players if it slams down on them. There is also lightning and thunder striking the ground at random, and a player too close to where it struck will be destroyed.
Completely different from the other game modes. Players race against each other on a different map - no hiding, no seeking, just racing. On top of the dash, players can trigger events to gain an advantage: destroy buildings to create shortcuts, let a bus drive and destroy every car in its way, drop a crate from a crane, or spawn a boat that jumps onto the street and destroys everything in its path.
